A respected photographer, journalist, and musician, C. Andrew Hovan has been involved with music since starting piano lessons at the tender young age of five. Adding clarinet to his studies while in middle school, Hovan ultimately devoted his full attention to drums and percussion while a freshman in high school. He attended the prestigious music conservatory at Baldwin-Wallace College, where he studied classical percussion with George Kiteley. At this time, he began expanding his sphere of influence by studying Latin and Brazilian percussion styles and collecting instruments. Hovan also studied drum set for a year at the Berklee College of Music in Boston with Skip Hadden, John Ramsay, and Tommy Campbell. Upon his return to Cleveland, he honed his big band and chart reading skills with the legendary Harry Damas.
Over the past 25 years, Hovan has played in a variety of Northeast Ohio venues with many of the city’s finest players including Moises Borges, Rich Holsworth, Josh Smith, Francois Roland, Larry Ross, Jackie Warren, Jeremey Poparad, Bobby Selvaggio, Mark Russo, the DanJo Big Band, and Just Jazz. He has also sat in with such artists as Arturo O’Farrill, Brian Lynch, Alex Harding, James Carter, Brian Charrette, and Organissimo. Hovan works as a percussionist with Cleveland's premier Doobie Brothers tribute band China Grove. Hovan has also played drums in Bob Niederriter’s trio with Columbus organ greats Jon Eshelman and Tony Monaco. The trio has performed at such venues as Passion Blues Club, Nelson Ledges, Filament, and the Columbus Hollywood Casino. He has also been heard with the Jazz Shepherds at such venues as the House of Blues, Christopher's Pub, Dublin Down, Old 97, and Jazz on Broadway. Hovan's own Organic Trio has performed at The Treelawn, Cliff Bells, The Bop Stop, BLU Jazz, and Con Alma and has featured organists Jon Eshelman and Clif Metcalf, along with guitarists Larry Barris, Chandler Carpenter, and Tim Mirth. Hovan's Generations Quartet has performed at The Bop Stop, BLU Jazz, and Con Alma and includes Tim Mirth, Taylor Arbogast, and Mark Russo. Hovan's project Double Take, a revisting of the mid-80s recordings of Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw, featuring Russo and Tommy Lehman has appeared at The Bop Stop and Treelawn Social Club. Slated for the summer of 2025, Hovan plans to explore the music of organist Larry Young with his Unity Project. Contact: [email protected] cahovan.com 216-543-3027 |
